Ages 15 - Adult
This class is for writers and performers interested in exploring the dramatic and rhythmic world of performance poetry. Also known as spoken word, this form of poetry concentrates on techniques that bring a poem to life. Students will have the opportunity to create original spoken word material and practice performance exercises in a welcoming environment.
Over the course of six weeks, students will discuss traditional elements of poetry and study notable spoken word performances. Students will learn how to identify and creatively write about the emotional themes in their lives. Eventually, performers will incorporate vocal techniques (volume, pace, strategic pauses, etc.), facial expressions, body movements, and memorization as added performance tools. The course will end with a in-class poetry slam where students will share their original pieces.
10:30 am - Noon, Saturdays, March 4, 11, 18, 25.
