Adventures in Drawing with Pencils and Pens

Grades 9 - ADULT
This class will explore creative techniques for how to draw a variety of subjects with graphite pencils and ink pens. Students will also learn ways to add color to some artworks with colored pencils and colored inks. The lessons include tips on how artists use line, shading, texture, composition, and observation to create everything from a fun and flowing loose sketch to a more detailed illustration. This class is suited for both beginners who wish to learn and grow basic drawing skills and those more experienced students who seek to hone their skills and try new things! No supplies are required.

Watercolor with Mixed Media - Intermediate Level - ONLINE CLASS

Grades 9 - Adult
This is a class for students who would like to explore watercolor painting from home. Students will also learn how to use additional mixed media such as color inks, watercolor pencils, and other media and techniques incorporated with watercolor. The class is open to all students who wish to experience water painting techniques. Zoom instruction includes step-by-step projects designed to guide you through the painting process from start to finish. The course will offer a variety of special techniques and approaches to making paintings of different subjects. Students will work on paintings along with the instructor as she demonstrates the steps. You will also receive emails with detailed information and examples so that you may practice further or complete a piece at home. Each session will also be recorded. Students will receive a supply list after they register.
The cost is $133 plus supplies.

Creative Constructions
with Sydney Jackson

Ages: 8 - 12
Grades 3 - 6
Creative Constructions is designed for students who have taken Art Adventures or have the basic art skills needed to create more complex activities and projects. This class will allow young creatives to construct original pieces of art and to learn more about painting, drawing, mixed media, narrative art, and printmaking. Creative Constructions students will be introduced to a variety of art materials and learn new artistic techniques while reinforcing the basic elements of art. For example, students will work with scratchboards, learn perspective drawing, try their hand at watercolor and acrylic painting, and learn about master artists. Small class size allows for individual attention in a fun and inviting environment!

Cyanotype Printing Workshop

Grades 9 - Adult
Cyanotype is a photo process developed in the late 1800s. We will be coating paper with a photosensitive solution to make our exposures to the sun. Exploring both regular and the wet processes will give the participants a variety of prints. This class is a wonderful way to understand how photography was originally used in its inception. Beautiful Indigo blue photo prints are the result of this process.

Young Potters

Grades 6 - 8
This is a pottery class for older elementary and middle school age children. In this course, students will create fun, decorative, and functional projects and can explore different techniques for working with clay including the pottery wheel.

Advanced Cyanotype

Grades 9 - Adult
Advanced Cyanotype will take you to the next level of this photo process. Students will further explore the wet method, learn how to layer their prints, make double exposures, and print on fabric. This two-session workshop will emphasize cyanotype techniques so the students can successfully create cyanotypes at home.
Pre-requisite: Beginning level Cyanotype Class or basic Cyanotype experience.

Flower Painting & Vase Mosaic

Grades 9 - Adult
This 4-day Impasto painting and mosaic workshop is for the person who wants to try painting and mosaics without having prior knowledge of either. Students will be creating a beautiful bouquet of flowers using water-soluble oil paint in a mosaic vase. The style is intuitive, casual, and abstract. The canvas is a 12" x 16" flat board which will fit a frame of your choice (not included). This is a great workshop to take with family or friends!

Story Collecting
with Anne G'Fellers-Mason

Ages 15 - Adult
This two-part class is designed for those interested in collecting oral stories from family members, neighbors, veterans, and community members. Participants learn how to conduct one-on-one interviews as well as how to hold story circles through a combination of class instruction and hands-on training, covering such skills as generating effective questions, finding potential storytellers, creating the best environment, as well as proper use of recording equipment. Participants each receive a PDF guidebook which follows the training course and Power Points. All who complete the course will be certified story collectors for Jonesborough’s StoryTown Programs. All Participants are encouraged to continue using the skills learned in this class by becoming a StoryTown Brigade member, and to collect stories from Washington County community members for use in Jonesborough’s StoryTown programs, which include a monthly radio show, podcast, annual play, and other projects.
